Hey, what’s up. Welcome back to the podcast. So, in today’s episode, I want to dive deep into the top four reasons why we fail. And the reason why I want to cover this is that if we can grasp intellectually what these concepts are and apply them to our lives, it’ll help us speed up so many barriers to success and help us overcome a lot more failure that we’re experiencing in our lives and not only in our home based businesses but in every single area of our life, including our health, our wealth, our relationships, whatever it is. So, I was inspired to talk about this by many different subjects. And one of the mentors that I’ve learned from, his name is Steve Seibold. And what this gentleman does is he interviews the world-class. But what’s interesting is he interviews people in the world-class from different industries and different professions. So, he interviews fortune 500 CEOs, he interviews Navy seals; he interviews the top 1% of athletes around the world. And what he does is he looks for their commonalities.
He interviews these people and asks, “what do the top 1% in the world have in common?” And what he’s found is that none of them have to do with the skills. For 100% of world-class achievers, it’s all in their mindset. It’s all in their attitude, it’s all in their character. And so that’s what I want to talk about today; just realizing that the top four failures that we have in life, it never comes down to our skills. It’s never going to come down to, “Hey, do I have a big enough network? Do I know the right people? Do I know enough people?” It’s never going to come down to, “am I good at Instagram? Am I good at Facebook? Am I good at whatever platform we’re using?” It’s never going to come down to “do I know how to effectively close?” or, “am I good at sales?” or “am I good at inviting people to take a look at my business?” It’s never going to come down to the skills. What it’s going to come down to is our attitude. Our attitude is the biggest determinator of success and failure. The biggest error that we do daily is putting our skills above our attitude.
And when we can get our attitude, right, when we can get our character, right. When we can get our mindset, right, the skills will follow organically. So, what are the top four reasons that we fail? And to give you a hint, every single one of them has to do with attitude and mindset and character. So, number one is fear. Every human beingexperiences fear. There’s an interview by Elon Musk and the lady’s asking him, “Hey, you must not feel any fear, right?” And he said “no, that’s wrong. I feel fear. The only difference is that I take action despite fear.” And so, one of the number one reasons that people fail is we do not take action despite fear. We let fear bring us down. We let fear win. And what we have to do is we have to be in control of fear. A part of fear is criticism, too. Receiving criticism from people who are in our network, our friends, or family. We can’t let that get us down. It’s like what the great Les Brown says, “someone’s opinion of you does not have to determine your reality.”
So, if someone has a negative opinion or criticism about you and what you’re doing, don’t let that affect you. Have thick skin and just realize “Hey, they’re not going to be paying your bills. You can go and decide what you want to do with your life.” And so that’s a part of fear. And the best way to beat fear is to take immediate action.Courage. What is courage? Courage is taking action despite fear. So, what does the second reason why people fail? The second reason why people fail is procrastination. We all have dealt with procrastination. Maybe you’re better at it today than you were yesterday, but guess what? As long as you have awareness, you can be bettertomorrow than you are today. And so, what is procrastination? Procrastination is just not doing something that you should be doing. And it all comes down to our character and our mindset. And it all comes down to our attitude about something. So, we should always be focusing on getting rid of procrastination.
That is the second reason why people fail. What is the third reason why people fail? The third reason is taking advice from people that don’t have what we want. And this is so common worldwide. For example, let’s say you have an idea to start a business and you go ask your uncle or your mom or your dad, or your brother or your sister and you say “Hey, I have this great business idea. What do you think?” The second, they give you their opinion and say, “Oh, like, you know, I don’t think that’ll work out, blah, blah, blah.” You let that affect you. And you believe that. And even if their current results that they have are not the results that you desire in your life, you still believe it. And so now that we’re aware of this, we can take action and have anunderstanding that we should only be taking advice from people who have the results that we want. And even further you could go and say, “We should only be taking advice from people who have what we want and have been where we are right now.
And so, this comes down to our attitude and it builds on our character and it helps us develop a better mindset. Any time we’re talking to someone, it’s just to realize and ask “Hey, is this someone that I want to learn from?”. And so, what is the fourth thingthat leads to failure for people. The fourth one is quitting too early. I’ve met so many people in my life who have started their home based businesses and they quit after a month or three months or a year or two years. If you’re going to be a doctor, it’s going to take you 10 years of schooling to be a doctor. A student that’s studying to become a doctor does not quit after a couple of years, knowing that it’s going to take eight more years of schooling. We should treat our businesses the same. We should create whatever personal growth that we’re going through the same. It’s going to take time. This is exactly the kind of topic that we’re constantly talking about in our Facebook community, the home based business community. It can be really hard to find a community of like-minded people who are working towards similar goals.
If you want to join the conversation there, it’s free. So, head over to ryanallenbell.com/community and click the join button. So how do we improve in all four of these areas? Let’s say currently you’re experiencing fear or procrastination, or maybe you know you’re taking advice from people that don’t have the results you want, or maybe you’ve been thinking about quitting knowing it’s too early if you’ve quit in something before. How can you fix these areas of your life? And what we want to do is the complete opposite of these four areas. So, what is the opposite of fear? Courage. That is what we should do. And what I invite you to do is to be overzealous about doing the complete opposite.
If you’re fearful about a lot of things in your life, use this as an opportunity to be courageous about everything in your life, instead of fearful. Go over and beyond. Get to a point where your circle, the people in your life are saying “wow, there’s something different about you.” And so, if you’re fearful, be courageous about everything. And if it comes down to criticism, which is a part of fear, just realize that, as I said is their opinion does not matter at all.
And just be courageous. It’s like what Elon Musk says; act despite fear. There’s an acronym for fear. It can say ‘face everything and run’, or it can say face everything and rise. So, invite you to do the latter, face everything, and rise. So, let’s go to the second one; procrastination. What is the opposite of procrastination? Consistency. When we start something, we’re consistent with it because if we do the right things long enough consistently, we will get the results that we desire. And so, what I invite you to do is if you know that you procrastinate in areas of your life, do the complete opposite and be consistent with everything. But be overzealous about it. Overdo your consistency so it becomes a habit and your life. There’s a great book called ‘The Compound Effect’ by Darren Hardy and he talks about consistency. And what ends up happening is when we’re consistent for a long period, that’s where change comes from.
Now, let’s go to the third reason why people fail and that is taking advice from people that don’t have what we want. And if we’re going to do the opposite of that, the opposite is only taken advice from people who have what we want and have been where we are right now. And what I invite you to do is the same thing; be overly aware. Be overly aware of who you’re learning from in your life right now. Every time someone says something to you, there should be a wall that goes up. And you should have a gut check and ask “Hey, is this someone that I want to learn from right now?” And what’s interesting is we’re learning from a lot of different people that don’t have the results that we want and we still let it come in.
For example, think about the media, think about the news, think about Facebook, think about Instagram, think about music, think about the radio, think about video games, think about movies. All of these sources of media affect us and we don’t even realize it. So, what I invite you to do is put up a wall and just ask yourself “Hey, is this something that I want to take in daily?” because eventually, it will start affecting your beliefs. And now you can be very particular about the people in your circle. When you’re talking to people, you could ask yourself, “Hey, is this someone that I want to learn from? Is this someone that I want to be like? Is this someone who has the results that I want? If the answer is yes, then be open about receiving whatever they’re teaching you, whatever advice they’re giving to you. And the fourth reason why we fail is quitting too early. And I believe this is the biggest reason why people fail. And I also believe by doing the complete opposite, it’s the number one reason why people have success.
And so, what is the opposite of quitting too early? The opposite of quitting too early is developing grit. And what is grit? Grit is outlasting people in anything that you do. If you can develop grit, no matter what you pursue in life, you will have success in it.There’s a test out there by Angela Duckworth, I believe. And it’s called the ‘grit’ test. And one of the concepts in it is if you’ve stuck with something for over two years, that is one of the first indicators of grit. So, ask yourself right now, what is something that you’re currently doing in your life that you’ve been doing for over two years of your life?
If there isn’t anything, this is a good indicator that, “Hey, I need to start developing more grit in my life”. Maybe starting your own home based business is the place to start. If you have your own business, or you’ve always thought about having a business and you haven’t developed grit yet in your life, make a decision today that, “Hey, I’m going to stick with this thing until I have success.” So, if you want to go from failing to succeeding, the next time that you’re fearful, be courageous. The next time you catch yourself procrastinating, force yourself to be consistent with whatever you’re procrastinating on. Protect your mind. Just know that most things that we hear and see are from people that don’t have the results that we want. Put up a filter.
Every time someone talks to you ask yourself, “do I want to receive this? Is this from someone I want to learn from? Do they have the results that I want?” When you catch yourself in inaction or quitting mentally, decide to have grit. And I dare you to be dramatic about doing the complete opposite of what you’re already doing if you see these failure tendencies in your life right now. And here’s a little formula to get you to momentum. Let’s say right now, you’re stagnant in your life. You’re currently experiencing temporary defeat. Awareness of attitude versus skills ignites the momentum. Knowing that it’s not just the skills that are causing failure right now, but it’s the attitude that you have in your life about what you’re currently doing.
Once you can fix that attitude, everything changes. And so, by having an awarenessthat it’s the attitude and not just the skills that ignites the momentum. And so, to create momentum in your life, all you have to do is change your perception of skills versus attitude. Let’s say up until this point, you’ve been focusing mostly on your skills, but you’re not getting results, have an awareness that attitude is more important than skills. And then what happens is you ignite this momentum and now you’re focusing on attitude more than skills. And what ends up happening is you start gaining more and more results in your life organically because you’ve developed the right attitude is the skills start to come.
You start developing the right skills in your life and it starts compounding. The more you focus on attitude, the better your skills become and the better your skills become, the more you’re able to focus on attitude and the better you focus on attitude, the better your skills become. And so, it’s a snowball effect. And so, I invite you, don’t focus on the skills first, focus on the attitude first. And I promise you when you get the attitude right, the skills will develop naturally.
